Our bartender character talked about closing shifts and regulars without us asking.

Images are generated inside the chat or from a separate tool. You can ask your character for a selfie in a certain outfit or setting, and the result keeps her face reasonably consistent. Realistic renders were good, with the usual AI trouble spots: hands and busy backgrounds sometimes came out wrong, and about one in eight images needed a retry. Anime outputs were cleaner and more consistent.

Prompts work best when they are short and concrete. Asking for a location, an outfit and a mood gave better results than long descriptions. The character’s base appearance is locked in from the creator, so you do not need to repeat hair color or body type every time. If a picture misses, rephrase rather than resend the same request, because each retry costs Neurons again.

Dream Clips are short generated videos of your character. They are a few seconds long and loop, so think of them as animated photos rather than scenes. Quality has improved a lot during 2026, and they are one of the reasons JOI stands out. Premium members get a monthly allowance, and beyond that each clip costs Neurons.

Live video and voice calls are the headline feature. You see an animated version of your character and talk in real time. The voice sounded natural with only a slight delay, and the character kept the context of the text chat. It is impressive, but pricey: about 2,000 Neurons for five minutes, which works out to well over $30 at small pack prices. We used calls as an occasional treat, not a daily habit.

JOI AI NSFW Limits and Content Policy

JOI is built for adults, and explicit roleplay is allowed for verified 18+ users. In our testing the platform handled romantic and sexual scenes between consenting adult characters without the sudden refusals that frustrate users on more cautious apps. One Reddit reviewer did report rejections during spicy chats, and we hit a couple of soft deflections with library characters, but custom characters were noticeably more open.

The hard lines are clear in the terms of service. Any content that sexualizes minors is banned, and so is sexual content depicting real people, including public figures, without consent. Lovescape deserves a mention for anyone who enjoys the building part more than the chatting part. The trade-off is chat depth, which is thinner over long sessions. OurDream AI is the other rival that comes close to JOI on media, and some users prefer its image style.
