Anime roleplay, free to startVmate AI Review 2026: What Is Left of the Uncensored Anime Roleplay Chatbot?
vmate.ai did not load during any of our October 2026 checks, so this is a desk review built from earlier listings, archived pages and user comments. The product itself offered a large library of illustrated characters, an NSFW toggle and a free tier.

Overall score
6.1
out of 10
The Vmate AI site was unreachable in October 2026: vmate.ai forwards to a domain with no DNS record. This is a desk review based on earlier listings, archived pages and user comments, and the score stays provisional until we can test the live product. Vmate AI built its reputation on volume and freedom: more than 1,000 anime and fantasy characters, a switch between NSFW and SFW chat, custom characters from your own artwork and a free daily allowance. The weak points were there from the start, with no voice, thin memory in long roleplays, no company name anywhere and paid prices that were never published.
This site did not load when we last checked on October 16, 2026. We keep the review for reference and treat the score as provisional until the service returns.

What is Vmate AI?
Vmate AI is a browser-based roleplay chatbot built around anime and fantasy characters. The pitch, as it appeared on the homepage and in directory listings, was an uncensored platform: more than 1,000 premade characters, a switch between NSFW and SFW chat, and an anime art generator that works inside the conversation. The name is often written VMate AI, and the official address is vmate.ai, which forwards to vmateai.com.
It launched on Product Hunt in 2024 under the tagline “Immersive AI Role Play with Fantasy AI Anime Character” and collected a single upvote there. Traffic data published by AIPure put the site at roughly 374,000 visits in June 2025, 61% of them from the United States, so it was not obscure. Who runs it is a different question. No company name appears in any listing we found. The only traces are an X account called VTuber_Maker and an itch.io page from a creator named vtuber studio.
Compared with the photoreal girlfriend apps we usually review, Vmate AI sits closer to Character.AI or a waifu chat app. The characters are illustrated, the categories include maid, catgirl and fantasy archetypes, and the tone leans toward playful roleplay more than relationship simulation. There is no mood tracker, no daily check-in and no relationship status.
Is Vmate AI still online in 2026?
We tried to open vmate.ai on three separate days in October 2026. The address answers with a permanent redirect to vmateai.com, and that domain has no DNS record: Google’s public resolver returns the Cloudflare nameservers and no IP address. Without an IP address, no browser in any country can load the page.
The Internet Archive holds a working snapshot of the homepage from May 2026, so the site was live five months before our check. We do not know whether this is a lapsed domain, a migration or a shutdown. Services in this niche come and go, and a missing DNS record is often the first sign of the latter, but it is also the kind of mistake that gets fixed within a week.
Everything below rests on the archived homepage description, listings on AIPure, G2 and TheAISurf, two independent write-ups from 2024 and 2026, and public comments on Product Hunt and itch.io. We say where each figure comes from and where it stays unverified. A full hands-on test follows as soon as the site responds again.
Vmate AI characters and roleplay
The library is the main asset. AIPure counts more than 1,000 premade characters, sorted into AI girlfriend, AI boyfriend and AI waifu groups, with sub-categories that read like an anime tag cloud: maid, catgirl, demon, childhood friend, teacher. Each card opens a details view with appearance, occupation, personality and roleplay traits, so you know what you are getting into before the first message.
Chats are one-to-one and run in a plain window with nothing else on screen. You type, the character answers in persona, and you can drop in your own images and emoticons. The July 2026 write-up on Differ describes replies as quick, with tone-matching that notices whether you are joking, flirting or steering into a scene. Our impression from the archived screens is an entertainment chatbot, a different product from what GoLove AI or Candy AI sell.
What we could not check is how the catalogue was moderated. With the site offline there are no reachable terms, no privacy policy and no published moderation or age-verification rules to read, and no named legal entity to ask. Our privacy and safety score reflects that gap, and it stays provisional until we can test the live product.
- Over 1,000 characters in girlfriend, boyfriend and waifu groups
- Details view with appearance, occupation and roleplay traits per character
- Image and emoticon uploads inside the chat
- AI-written background stories and adjustable chat backgrounds
Creating your own Vmate AI character
Character creation was one of the few areas where Vmate AI went further than the average anime chatbot. Instead of sliders for face and body, you upload a picture, your own art or a generated one, then write the personality, a backstory and a few example lines of dialogue. The dialogue samples matter more than they look. They set the character’s rhythm and vocabulary, and the AIPure guide calls them the biggest lever on how a custom character talks.
We could not find a public gallery of user creations, and the sources disagree on whether creation was open to free accounts. The look-alike site says Pro only; the original FAQ said nothing about a paywall. Treat it as free until the site proves otherwise.
- Upload an image for the character
- Write personality traits and a short backstory
- Add a few example dialogue lines
- Pick NSFW or SFW mode for the character
- Optionally let the AI draft a background story
Vmate AI images, expressions and the missing voice
Two visual features set the platform apart. The first is mood-based image switching: the character’s displayed picture changes with the emotional tone of the conversation, so a teasing line and a sad line show different expressions. The second is a chat command that asks the character to send a photo, generated on the spot by the built-in anime art generator with a text prompt and a style choice. Both run in an illustrated style. There is no photoreal option and no video.
Voice is absent. Neither the archived homepage nor the main listings mention voice messages or calls, and the one directory that claims voice input also hedges every other line with “varies by region”. If talking to your character matters, JOI AI and Candy AI both offer calls, and Lovescape adds a live camera feature on top of its creator.
| Feature | Vmate AI |
|---|---|
| Character images | Illustrated, switch with the mood of the chat |
| Image generation | Anime art generator, text prompt plus style |
| Photoreal style | No |
| Voice messages or calls | None found |
| Video | None |
Memory and chat quality in long sessions
Chat history is saved to your account, and the homepage promised that the model keeps long conversations in context. User reports say otherwise. The 2026 review that ran extended sessions describes a companion losing the user’s name within two scenes, and a guide it cites puts the practical context at a few thousand tokens before earlier plot points drop out. That matches what we see from most free anime chatbots: fine for a one-evening scene, shaky across a week-long storyline.
Short exchanges get better marks. Both independent write-ups mention speed and a tone that follows the user, and the Product Hunt comment quoted below praises the bots; none of them mention depth. If you want a character who remembers your job, your sister’s wedding and the joke from last Tuesday, this is the wrong tool; Nectar AI and GoLove AI did that far better in our tests.
- Good: fast replies, characters stay in persona for short scenes
- Okay: saved history you can scroll back through
- Weak: recall of names and plot points after long roleplays
Vmate AI NSFW rules and the toggle
Vmate AI marketed itself as uncensored. In practice that meant a toggle between NSFW and SFW modes, flipped per chat, and a stated plan to keep the two kinds of content separated as the platform grew. Explicit text roleplay with adult characters was allowed in NSFW mode, and generated images follow the same switch.
What we could not verify is enforcement. We found no published list of banned themes, no age verification beyond a self-declaration, and no terms, privacy policy or moderation rules we could read. Candy AI and GoLove AI both publish explicit bans on minors, real people and non-consent. Until Vmate AI publishes the same, we rate its adult chat as capable but poorly governed.
Vmate AI pricing: the free tier and the unpublished paid plan
Free was the headline. You could sign up with an email, or skip the account for basic chat, and talk every day up to a cap. The cap itself was never published. Listings quote 50 and 100 messages a day, and the archived FAQ only says daily limits exist to keep the service stable. Paid “membership packages” were mentioned on the homepage with no prices attached.
Third-party figures fill that gap badly. One aggregator describes credit bundles from about $4.90 for 1,000 credits up to about $49.90 for 25,000, with messages costing one to two credits and images five. Another lists weekly, monthly and yearly premium plans priced as “varies”. The look-alike site quotes $9.99 a month. None of these numbers appear in anything the operator published, so we do not repeat them as fact. If the site returns, read the checkout page before you pay.
Is Vmate AI legit and safe?
The traffic data and the Product Hunt launch show that the product existed and had users. A traceable business behind it is what we could not find: no company name, no registered address, no support email and no privacy policy we could read. G2 lists the seller with zero reviews. The itch.io page that pointed to it carries a 1.0 out of 5 rating from three users, and a comment there asks the questions we also had: where is the privacy information, which model is this, who is behind it.
The homepage claimed encryption and a “safe, private place”, which is the seller’s own description, not an audit. For a platform you reach only through a browser, with no visible operator and a domain that currently does not resolve, our advice is the standard one applied firmly: no real names, no photos of your own face, a throwaway email, and no card details until the operator is identifiable.
- Operator: not disclosed
- Legal pages: not reachable at the time of writing
- Independent ratings: G2 0 reviews, itch.io 1.0/5 from 3 ratings, Product Hunt 1 upvote
- Age check: self-declaration only, as far as we can tell
How we reviewed Vmate AI
Our normal process is a hands-on test over several weeks, which we could not run here. We tried to load vmate.ai on three separate days in October 2026 and checked the DNS answer each time. We then read the archived homepage, the AIPure, G2, TheAISurf and ToolPilot listings, the Differ review from July 2026 and the ScriptByAI guide, plus every public comment we could find on Product Hunt, itch.io, Reddit and Trustpilot. Reddit and Trustpilot had nothing.
Scores use our seven fixed criteria. Where we had only third-party evidence we scored conservatively, and we lowered privacy and safety for the missing operator details, the unreachable legal pages and the look-alike domain. This desk review will be replaced by a full test, with new scores, if the site comes back.
| Criterion | Weight | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation quality | 25% | 6.5 |
| Memory and consistency | 20% | 5.5 |
| Adult chat experience | 15% | 7.0 |
| Customization | 10% | 7.0 |
| Voice and media | 10% | 5.5 |
| Privacy and safety | 10% | 4.5 |
| Pricing value | 10% | 6.0 |
| Overall | 100% | 6.1 |
- Availability check: DNS and HTTP tests on three days in October 2026
- Source review: archived homepage plus six directory and review pages
- User feedback search: Product Hunt, itch.io, G2, Reddit, Trustpilot
- Scoring: seven criteria, conservative wherever a claim stayed unverified
Vmate AI vs Candy AI, JOI AI, OurDream AI and Lovescape
If you came here for anime roleplay you can use today, pick one of the four below. All of them are online, name their operator and publish prices. Candy AI and OurDream AI offer anime styles next to realistic ones, JOI AI is the strongest on voice, and Lovescape has the deepest character creator. The prices for the four alternatives are their lowest advertised monthly rates on annual billing in October 2026; Vmate AI never published one, and the third-party figures for it could not be checked against the site.
| Feature | Vmate AI | Candy AI | JOI AI | OurDream AI | Lovescape |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Status, October 2026 | Offline | Online | Online | Online | Online |
| Anime style | Yes, the only style | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Free tier | Daily message cap | Very limited | Limited | Limited | Limited |
| Voice | No | Calls | Calls | Calls | Live camera |
| Starting price | Not published | $3.99/mo | $5.08/mo | $9.99/mo | $7.99/mo |
| Operator disclosed | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Choose Vmate AI only if it returns and you specifically want a very large illustrated character library with a free daily allowance. For everything else, OurDream AI is the closest match in style with far better footing, and Candy AI is the better all-rounder.
Pricing & plans
Vmate AI ran on a free tier with a daily message cap and mentioned paid membership packages without publishing prices. The figures third parties quote are inconsistent and unconfirmed, so we list only what the platform itself stated.

Membership packages
Not published
- Mentioned on the homepage without prices
- Presumably raises or removes the daily cap

At the time of writing the site did not load, so no plan could be bought. If it returns, read the checkout page and look for a refund policy before paying.
What users say
We found no Trustpilot page and no Reddit threads about Vmate AI as of October 2026, and G2 lists it with zero reviews. The only public opinions are one Product Hunt comment and one itch.io comment under a 1.0/5 rating from three users.
“Calls it a very good website with very nice bots and praises the creators.”
“Asks where the rest of the information is: online or offline, which models, what it costs, how private it is. Finds the description poorly translated and does not trust the developer.”
Our verdict
6.1/10The Vmate AI site was unreachable in October 2026, so this verdict rests on earlier listings, archived pages and user comments, and the score is provisional. Vmate AI was a decent free anime roleplay chatbot with an unusually large character library and a creation flow that rewards people who bring their own artwork. It was never a strong companion app: memory faded in long sessions, there was no voice, the operator stayed anonymous and paid prices never appeared. Our score of 6.1 reflects a product that worked for casual anime roleplay but gave users no company to hold accountable and no clear price to judge. If it comes back, use the free tier, keep your details out of it and look for the terms, privacy policy and moderation rules we could not find. Until then, do not pay anyone who claims to sell Vmate AI access, and check back once the domain resolves again.
Site offlineFrequently asked questions
Is Vmate AI free?
It was. The free tier gave daily chat up to an unpublished cap, access to the full character library and the NSFW toggle. Paid membership packages were mentioned but never priced on the site.
Why does vmate.ai not load?
vmate.ai redirects to vmateai.com, and that domain had no DNS record during our October 2026 checks. The site was still archived in May 2026. Whether it is a lapsed domain or a shutdown is unknown.
Does Vmate AI allow NSFW content?
Yes. A per-chat toggle switches between NSFW and SFW modes for users who declare they are 18 or older. We found no published list of banned themes, which is a mark against it.
Is there a Vmate AI app for iPhone or Android?
We found no official listing in the App Store or on Google Play. The VMate apps in both stores are video players and video chat apps from unrelated developers.
Can I create my own character in Vmate AI?
Yes. You upload an image, write personality traits and a backstory, and add example dialogue lines. There is no slider-based body editor; the look comes from the picture you provide.
Does Vmate AI have voice chat?
No voice messages or calls were documented anywhere we looked. JOI AI and Candy AI are the picks if voice matters to you.
What are the best Vmate AI alternatives?
OurDream AI is the closest match for anime-style roleplay with a real company behind it. Candy AI is the better all-rounder, JOI AI leads on voice, and Lovescape has the deepest character creator.
