Tipsy Chat Review 2026: Two Weeks Inside the Gem Economy and Limitless Mode

A big, well-built character roleplay platform with images, video and voice calls, paid for message by message in gems that disappear faster than any subscription suggests.

Overall score

7.1

out of 10

Tipsy Chat is a character roleplay app in the Character.AI mould, with anime and game characters, user-built worlds, a ScenePlay mode, image and video generation and voice calls. The writing on its better models is long and stays in character, and the creator tools are the deepest we have seen in this price bracket. The catch is the gem system. Every message, picture and clip costs gems, memory makes each message dearer, and even the $44.90 Premium tier runs dry for heavy users. Adult content exists behind a Limitless toggle but the filter is inconsistent and the terms formally forbid it. Good for story-driven roleplayers with a budget, frustrating for anyone who wants one companion and unlimited chat.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Character and world builder is deep, with public publishing and gem payouts for creators
  • Several AI models to choose from, and the stronger ones write long replies that stay in character
  • ScenePlay mode, image and video generation and voice calls in one app
  • Real apps on iOS and Android plus a full web version, synced through one account
  • Daily check-in gems let you try the chat for days without paying
  • Frequent updates, an active Discord and a support team that reviewers describe as responsive

Cons

  • Gems run out fast; reviewers on the $44.90 Premium tier report emptying their allowance in days
  • Per-message cost rises with the memory limit, so long stories get more expensive the longer they run
  • Memory drift and repeated lines in long chats, and pinned memory is paid-only
  • Adult filter is inconsistent, and the terms of service forbid what Limitless mode permits
  • Privacy policy promises end-to-end encryption while also sending chats to five AI providers

What is Tipsy Chat? The AI Tavern explained

Tipsy Chat is a character roleplay platform from Lightspeed Intelligence Pte. Ltd., a company registered in Singapore. The tagline is “Live Your Story” and older store copy still calls it the Tipsy AI Tavern, which is where the name comes from. There is no drunk persona and nothing about alcohol in the product. You pick a character from a public library of anime leads, game villains, boyfriends, girlfriends and original creations, or you build your own, and then you chat, branch into scenes, generate pictures and short clips, and call the character by voice.

The scale surprised us. Google Play lists more than a million installs and about 52,000 ratings at 4.1 stars, the App Store shows 4.6 from roughly 12,000 ratings, and in October 2026 the Android app sat in the top ten grossing entertainment apps in the US store. That grossing rank comes from gem sales. What the app costs you depends on which model you pick and how high you set the memory limit.

Signing up at tipsy.chat takes an email or a Google or Apple login. The terms require users to be 18 or older, although Google Play rates the app Mature 17+. The home feed has tabs for For You, Trending, Worlds, Latest, Popular and Following, and a Limitless switch that reveals adult characters. On iOS that switch is hidden until you enable it from your account on the web, a workaround for App Store rules that we explain in the NSFW section.

Tipsy Chat conversation quality and memory

Tipsy Chat does not run one model. The privacy policy names Google, Amazon Web Services, xAI and OpenAI as text providers, and the model picker in the chat shows several options at different gem prices. On the cheaper models a reply cost us between 3 and 12 gems; the stronger ones ran 20 to 40 before memory was taken into account. The expensive models wrote two or three paragraphs, kept the character sheet in view and reacted to small cues in our messages. The cheap ones were fine for banter and poor at plot.

Repetition is the main writing flaw. In ScenePlay-style chats the app offers reply options, and when we typed our own line instead of picking one, the character sometimes restated its last message almost word for word before the story moved on. A Google Play reviewer in September 2026 described exactly the same loop. Regenerating helps, but each regeneration costs gems, which makes a free fix in other apps feel like a small tax here.

A Max Memory Limit setting controls how much of the chat the model sees, and the subscription FAQ says plainly that a higher limit and a longer chat raise the gem cost of each message. The FAQ also says free users can use up to a million tokens of memory on supported models, which sounds generous until you see the per-message bill at that setting. One App Store reviewer reported 300 gems for a single message with memory turned up. Pinned memory, where you fix key facts and plot points so they survive, is only available from the Standard tier. Reviewers describe characters forgetting early events after a dozen or so story levels, and we saw a side character change jobs between sessions in a long world chat on the free tier.

  • Strong: in-character writing and reply length on the better models
  • Strong: scene control, since you can steer tone and setting directly
  • Okay: consistency inside one session with memory turned up
  • Weak: recall across sessions on the free tier, and repeated lines when you ignore the suggested options

Characters, worlds and ScenePlay mode

The character builder is where Tipsy Chat beats single-companion apps. You set a name, look, personality, voice, backstory and example dialogue, and you decide at creation whether the character is SFW or adult. That choice is final for that character, so a flirty bot you want to take further later has to be rebuilt. There is no cap on how many characters you can make. The limit on free accounts is three role cards, the personas you play as, and three inspirations, the prompt-style starters. Standard raises role cards to ten or more and the top tier removes the cap.

Worlds group several characters into one setting with shared lore, and ScenePlay mode turns a chat into a choose-your-path story with generated visuals at each beat. Relationship levels, character diaries and story moments open up as you go, which gives longer chats a sense of progress. One App Store reviewer singled out the relationship level system as the reason the app felt better than its rivals, and we agree it is the most game-like feature here.

Publishing matters too. Anyone can post characters and worlds to the public feed, and creators earn gems when other people chat with their bots. A reviewer who credited the app with ending a writing slump pointed at exactly those incentives. If you only ever want to talk to one girlfriend character, this whole layer is noise. If you like building, it is the best reason to be here.

  • Name, appearance, personality, voice and backstory fields
  • SFW or adult flag chosen once at creation
  • Worlds with several characters and shared lore
  • ScenePlay mode with choices and generated visuals
  • Public publishing with gem earnings for creators

Tipsy Chat images, video and voice calls

Pictures come from a button in the chat or automatically inside ScenePlay. Our Gem History log put an image at around 80 gems. Quality is good, especially for anime styles, and faces stayed recognisable across a scene more often than not. Paid tiers get priority generation and watermark-free downloads; free users wait longer and get a watermark.

Short video clips use the same gem pool and cost noticeably more than stills, so we treated them as an occasional treat. Voice is the pleasant surprise. Characters have assigned voices, you can call them, and the voices sound natural with sensible pacing. The privacy policy names ElevenLabs as the voice provider, which explains the quality. Voice input is also supported, so you can talk instead of type.

Tipsy Chat gems and pricing explained

Everything on Tipsy Chat costs gems, and gems come in two colours. Blue gems arrive once a month with a subscription, expire at the end of that month and reset to your plan allowance on the refresh date. Red gems are the ones you buy in packs or earn through check-ins, missions and creator payouts, and they never expire. The app spends blue first, then red, which is the right order, but it also means a month where you chat less simply wastes blue gems.

At the time of writing the store listings show three subscriptions: Get a Taste at $4.90 a month or $46.90 a year, Standard at $14.90 a month or $94.90 a year, and Premium at $44.90 a month or $299.00 a year. The subscription FAQ mentions a fourth Deluxe tier and says annual billing saves up to 50 percent, but the App Store prices work out to roughly 20 to 47 percent off (about 20 percent on Get a Taste, 47 on Standard and 44 on Premium), and we could not see a Deluxe price in the US stores. Monthly gem allowances are not printed on the official FAQ either. A year-old DreamGen breakdown listed about 1,200 blue gems for Get a Taste, 4,000 for Standard, 15,000 for Premium and 30,000 for Deluxe, and the Standard figure matched the roughly 4,000 blue gems our test account received when we moved to that tier, so treat the others as approximate.

Gem packPriceNotes
500 gems$1.49First purchase only
1,000 gems$5.90
2,000 gems$9.99
4,000 gems$19.90
8,000 gems$38.90
15,000 gems$69.90
50,000 gems$199.00Best rate per gem

At roughly 12 gems per message on a cheap model, Get a Taste buys about 100 messages a month, a little over three a day. Standard stretches to around 330. Premium sounds like 1,250 messages until you add images at 80 gems each and turn the memory limit up, at which point a single evening of ScenePlay with pictures can eat a thousand gems. That is how a Google Play reviewer ended up paying $45 and still running out, and how an App Store reviewer on the top tier was empty after two days. Gems also vanish when the service is down, since failed replies are not always refunded, a complaint we read more than once.

Tipsy Chat NSFW rules and Limitless mode

Tipsy Chat runs two lanes. Limited is the default and shows only characters flagged SFW. Limitless adds the characters flagged adult at creation, and you switch between them from the feed on the web and on Android. On iOS the switch does not appear until you open your account on tipsy.chat and tick “Enable to show Limitless on iOS”, after which the app shows adult cards too. The App Store listing is rated 18+ for sexual content and nudity, so Apple knows what is inside; the toggle just keeps it off by default.

In practice, romantic and sexual roleplay between adult characters runs in Limitless, but it is moody. Several reviewers in 2026 complained that the chat refused sexual dialogue even with the 18+ option on, or rewrote the scene into something tamer, and one said terms related to LGBTQ+ relationships were blocked for a time. We hit refusals too, roughly one scene in five on the stronger models, and switching model or rephrasing usually got past them. Explicit images are more restricted than explicit text.

The paperwork does not match the product. The Community Guidelines and the Terms of Service, updated on 2 September 2026, prohibit obscene or pornographic content outright. The app clearly permits a lot of it, so enforcement is at the company’s discretion, and a scene that works today could be blocked after a model change. The hard limits you would expect are in place regardless: nothing involving minors, real people or non-consent.

Privacy, data and billing

The privacy policy, last updated on 5 September 2026, says private chats are end-to-end encrypted and that not even Tipsy Chat staff can read them. The same document lists five AI providers in the United States that receive your text, images or voice for processing: Google, Amazon Web Services, xAI, OpenAI and ElevenLabs. It also says chat content may be used to train models. Google Play’s data safety panel lists encryption in transit only. Those statements appear to conflict, so assume your chats are machine-readable and keep real names and places out of them.

Three companies appear in the terms. The service belongs to Lightspeed Intelligence Pte. Ltd. in Singapore, Waffo.com Limited in Hong Kong is named as an authorised distributor, and payments may be processed by Lumien Company Limited, registered in England and Wales. None of that suggests fraud, and the app has run for two years with public updates, but it does mean a billing dispute can bounce between entities.

Billing runs through the App Store, Google Play or RuStore, with a web checkout for gem packs. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends from your store subscriptions page; deleting the app does not cancel. The current period is never refunded when you cancel or downgrade. Refund decisions sit with Apple or Google, and Google Play lets you request one yourself within 48 hours. An upgrade shows up as two charges, with the old plan credited a few days later, which the FAQ warns about. Account deletion is immediate, although the policy reserves the right to keep popular public characters you created.

  • Login: email, Google or Apple
  • Payment: store subscriptions and gem packs, web checkout for gems
  • Cancel: in your store account, at least a day before renewal
  • Refunds: via Apple or Google, 48-hour self-service on Play
  • Data: processed by five US AI providers, may be used for training

How we tested Tipsy Chat

Two of us used Tipsy Chat for 14 days across the web app, an iPhone and an Android phone. The first week ran on the free tier with daily check-in gems only. We then spent about three days on Get a Taste for its blue allowance, bought one 2,000 gem pack to test image and video costs, and spent the final four days on Standard to try pinned memory and priority generation. In total we chatted with eleven public characters, built two of our own plus one small world, generated about 60 images and a handful of clips, and made several voice calls.

We scored against the seven criteria in our review methodology with the usual fixed weights. For memory we planted six facts in week one and checked them on later days at two different memory limits. For cost we exported the Gem History log and worked out an average per message for each model. We tested Limitless on the web and on iOS after enabling it, and we cancelled the subscription on Google Play to confirm the process.

Tipsy Chat vs JOI AI, Candy AI, OurDream AI and Lovescape

Tipsy Chat is a different kind of product from the adult companion apps we usually review. It is a library of thousands of characters with a creator economy, while JOI AI, Candy AI, OurDream AI and Lovescape are built around one or a few companions you shape yourself. The App Store and web prices in the table are those listed in October 2026, and Tipsy Chat’s $1.49 first-purchase pack is a one-off.

Pick Tipsy Chat if you want fan-fiction style stories, worlds with several characters, and a phone app that is actually in the app stores. Pick Candy AI or JOI AI if you want one girlfriend, unlimited messages for a flat price and adult chat that does not argue back. OurDream AI wins for image control and Lovescape for its visual creator. If memory over months is your priority, GoLove AI held details better than anything here, and Nectar AI is the closer rival for people who want both community characters and adult freedom.

Tips for spending fewer gems on Tipsy Chat

Gem management is the thread running through the unhappy store reviews, and it is also the part you control. In our second week we kept a cheap model for small talk and left the Max Memory Limit low, and our Gem History average per message dropped to about half of what it was in week one.

  1. Check in every day under Profile, then Tasks; the free red gems never expire
  2. Use a cheap model for small talk and switch to a strong one only for scenes that matter
  3. Keep the Max Memory Limit low in casual chats and raise it only when the plot depends on earlier events
  4. On Standard or above, pin the facts you care about instead of paying for a huge memory window
  5. Buy the 500 gem first-purchase pack for $1.49 before any subscription; it is the cheapest way to test paid models
  6. Spend blue gems before the monthly refresh, since they do not roll over
  7. Publish one decent character; a popular bot earns gems while you sleep
  8. If you want annual billing, check the real discount first, about 20 percent on Get a Taste, 47 on Standard and 44 on Premium, then compare it with a 50,000 gem pack
  9. Enable Limitless from your web account before you look for adult characters on iPhone

One more habit: screenshot the Gem History screen whenever a reply fails during an outage. Support can credit gems lost to errors, but only when you can show the charge, and the three Android reviewers who complained about wasted gems in September 2026 did not mention keeping screenshots.

Is Tipsy Chat legit and safe?

Lightspeed Intelligence Pte. Ltd. publishes a Singapore address in its terms, the apps have shipped regular updates since 2024 with version 1.4.10 arriving on 1 October 2026, and more than a million people have installed the Android version. There is no Trustpilot profile as of October 2026 and we found no substantive Reddit threads, so the store listings are the main independent record, and they land at 4.1 on Google Play and 4.6 on the App Store.

The risks are money and small print. Gems disappear quickly, the top tier costs $44.90 a month, a few reviewers report charges they did not understand, and the terms, privacy policy and community guidelines do not agree with each other on encryption and adult content. The company reserves the right to review and edit user content, and popular public characters can outlive your account. The free tier is safe to try. Hold off on the $199 pack of 50,000 gems until a month of Gem History shows what you spend.

Pricing & plans

Tipsy Chat is free to download and use with daily check-in gems. Three subscriptions appear in the US app stores, with a fourth Deluxe tier mentioned in the FAQ, and gem packs are sold separately. Our verdict

7.1/10

Tipsy Chat is the most complete character roleplay app we have tested this year, and the one whose billing we trust least to stay inside a budget. The creator tools, worlds, ScenePlay mode, voice calls and real mobile apps put it ahead of the single-companion crowd on features, and the stronger models write well. Against that, every message is metered, memory costs extra, the adult filter changes its mind, and the privacy policy promises encryption while listing five AI providers that process your chats. Our advice is to spend a week on check-in gems with the Gem History screen open. Pick Tipsy Chat if you build characters and worlds and can live with a per-message bill; skip it if you want one companion, a flat monthly price and adult scenes that are never refused.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tipsy Chat free?

You can download it and chat without paying. Free accounts earn gems through daily check-ins and missions, get three role cards and can use every model on a pay-per-message basis. Pinned memory, priority image generation and monthly gem allowances need a subscription.

How much does Tipsy Chat cost?

The US app stores list Get a Taste at $4.90 a month, Standard at $14.90 and Premium at $44.90, or $46.90, $94.90 and $299.00 a year, which is roughly 20 to 47 percent less than paying monthly. A Deluxe tier is mentioned in the FAQ, but we could not find its price in the US stores. Gem packs run from $1.49 for 500 gems on a first purchase to $199 for 50,000. Every message, image and clip costs gems on top of the plan.

Does Tipsy Chat allow NSFW content?

Adult characters sit behind a Limitless toggle for users over 18, and romantic and sexual roleplay runs there, although the filter refuses or softens scenes inconsistently. The terms of service formally prohibit pornographic content, so the rules can change. Minors, real people and non-consent are banned outright.

Is there a Tipsy Chat app for Android?

Yes. Tipsy Chat: Live Your Story is on Google Play with more than a million installs, on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision (the listing is not verified for macOS), on RuStore, and in the browser at tipsy.chat. One account syncs across all of them.

Does Tipsy Chat have voice calls?

Yes. Characters have assigned voices generated through ElevenLabs, and you can call them or send voice input. Calls cost gems like everything else.

Who owns Tipsy Chat and is it safe?

Lightspeed Intelligence Pte. Ltd. in Singapore runs the service, with a Hong Kong distributor and store-based billing. It is a legitimate, widely used app. The caveats are a privacy policy that claims end-to-end encryption while sending chats to five AI providers for processing and training, and a gem system that empties quickly.

How do I cancel Tipsy Chat and can I get a refund?

Turn off auto-renewal in your App Store, Google Play or RuStore account at least 24 hours before the period ends; deleting the app does not cancel. You keep benefits until the period ends and the current period is not refunded. Refunds are decided by Apple or Google, and Google Play allows a self-service request within 48 hours.

Does the name mean Tipsy Chat is about drinking?

No. The name comes from the original Tipsy AI Tavern theme, a fantasy inn where you meet characters. There is no drunk persona, no alcohol content and nothing in the product that promotes drinking.
